Ottawa – 10th March 2026
As part of activities marking the 69th Independence Anniversary of the Republic of Ghana, the High Commission successfully hosted a series of commemorative events in Ottawa from 3rd to 7th March 2026.
From 3rd to 5th March 2026, the Mission held an Open Day, during which the Chancery welcomed Ghanaians and members of the general public from Ottawa and surrounding areas. The initiative provided an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the work of the High Commission and to engage directly with staff on matters relating to trade and investment, culture, consular services, and community affairs. The Mission recorded a strong turnout, reflecting the continued interest and support of the Ghanaian community and partners.
On 6th March 2026, the Mission organised a Flag Raising Ceremony at Ottawa City Hall to commemorate Ghana’s Independence Day. The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Ottawa, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and executive members of the Ghanaian Association of Ottawa. In raising the national flag, the ceremony underscored the longstanding and growing relations between Ghana and Canada, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance, peace, and development, and acknowledging the country’s contribution to the African continent and the global community. The ceremony was held under the national theme for the 69th Independence Anniversary: “Building Prosperity. Restoring Hope.”
Later that evening, the Mission hosted a National Day Diplomatic Reception at the Infinity Convention Centre. The reception was honoured by the presence of Ms. Cheryl Urban, Assistant Deputy Minister for Africa and Pan-Geographic Affairs, other officials from Global Affairs Canada, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the Dean of the African Group of Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic community, government officials, the Canada–Africa Chamber of Commerce, leaders of the Ghanaian community in Ottawa, the business community, and friends of Ghana. The High Commission expresses its appreciation to all partners and stakeholders whose participation contributed to the success of the event.
The celebrations continued on 7th March 2026 with a community event organised in collaboration with the Ghanaian Association of Ottawa at the Mosaic Convention Centre. The gathering brought together a broad cross-section of the Ghanaian community, including traditional leaders, the clergy, youth groups, professionals, and community organisations.
The High Commissioner, H.E. Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, served as Guest of Honour, while Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, was the Special Guest of Honour. The event showcased Ghana’s cultural heritage through music, cuisine, and traditional displays, and provided an opportunity to reflect on milestones in Ghana–Canada relations. Messages delivered highlighted the contributions of the Ghanaian diaspora to national development, ongoing development efforts in Ghana, the upcoming direct flight between Toronto and Accra which is expected to promote businesses, enhance tourism, people-to- people ties, and the anticipated participation of the Ghana Black Stars in the FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The week-long celebration concluded with a Thanksgiving Service at New Life International Methodist Church Ottawa, where prayers were offered for Ghana, its leadership, and its people, as well as for the Ghanaian community in Canada.
The High Commission extends its sincere gratitude to all stakeholders, including Global Affairs Canada, diplomatic and community leaders, partner institutions, and all attendees whose support ensured the successful commemoration of Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary in Ottawa. The Mission remains committed to strengthening relations with the Ghanaian community, the Government of Canada, and all partners dedicated to advancing the shared interests of both nations.
