Ottawa – 20 November 2025 – The High Commission is pleased to announce that Air Transat, a leading Canadian leisure airline, officially unveiled on 20th November 2025 its new direct scheduled air service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Canada, and Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Ghana. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the operationalization of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement initialed ad referendum in March 2025 between the Governments of Ghana and Canada. The new route is expected to commence on June 17, 2026, and continue through October 22, 2026, with two weekly non-stop flights scheduled on Wednesdays and Sundays. Air Transat will operate the service using Airbus A330 aircraft, each with a seating capacity of 332 passengers. This initiative represents the first direct air connection between Canada and Ghana, and is expected to significantly enhance bilateral air connectivity, simplify travel logistics, and foster deeper engagement between the two nations.
This achievement underscores the shared commitment of both Governments to deepening diplomatic and economic relations through tangible cooperation in the aviation sector. Speaking on the launch, the Honourable Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister for Transport of the Republic of Ghana, stated, “Air Transat flights from Toronto, Canada to Accra, Ghana are not mere flights in the skies, but a connection between aspirations and reality.” His remarks underscore the broader significance of this initiative, which extends beyond transportation to encompass cultural exchange, economic opportunities, and community connections.
The direct service is expected to deliver substantial benefits to the Ghanaian diaspora in Canada, particularly in Ontario, by providing a long-awaited, convenient travel option that eliminates the need for transits through European hubs. It also opens new avenues for Canadian travelers seeking to explore Ghana and the broader West African subregion, whether for tourism, heritage, business, or academic purposes.
Air Transat’s inclusion of Ghana in its Summer 2026 program reflects a strategic recognition of the country’s growing role as a gateway to West Africa. The launch of this direct service responds to increasing demand for accessible travel options to the region and affirms Ghana’s position as a central hub for leisure, heritage, and business travel across the sub-region.
The High Commission commends Air Transat for collaborating with the Commission to establish this vital link and reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives that deepen Ghana–Canada relations and advance mutual prosperity.
